Melissa & Doug Learning Mat Crayons

It's a great concept especially because the little ones tend to break traditional crayons. Unfortunately these slip out so easily from the case you end up sitting there putting them back in constantly.

Got these as a gift along with the dinosaur mat. The little push button is hard to move and my 3 yr old broke all his fingernails trying to push the crayons up.

I bought the mat and crayons for my two year old granddaughter. She loves them. When she is done with dinner, she still sits at the table and colors. The crayons clean up great - even on the hardwood floor and dinner table. I am so glad I saw these at the store! Will be ordering another set of crayons soon

How can we get refills? What are the crayons made of so I can try to make them if there is no refills available

Are there any other crayons that can be used with the mats?

These are horrible they make huge messes. Will not waste my money on this . I'm so very disappointed

Kids loved them! They were so easy to hold for my baby girl! Grandson loves them as well.

This children use it on the learning mats were purchased at a shop in Gatlinburg, TN. They really like them.
I do have a question. How can you get the crayon off the walls. Our 3 year old used it on our bathroom wall. It looks awful.

I bought the mats a year ago and pencils were not a success. These crayons do the job !

Learning Mat is solid, doesn't bend or rip, easy clean up with a baby wipe or damp towel.
Crayons are bright and work on the mat, but the crayon part falls out of the holder and there is no way (besides a knife) to sharpen them. Once we had used up the crayons we switched to dry erase markers.

Bought these crayons with all the learning mats for my granddaughter. Wish I had read reviews before purchasing. They are a waste of money. The crayons do not stay in the holders, are so soft after a few strokes they do not write neatly and you can't sharpen them like you would a regular crayon. We tried a #2 pencil but it does not show up very well on the mats. I like the mats themselves but they are if no use if we can't find a writing instrument we can use kn them.

The crayons lasted my daughter only two coloring sessions. I would appreciate a larger crayon (and crayon replacement options). You have to buy a brand new set when you run low on the whatever substance it is. They're not specific at all with what the material is...

I do enjoy that they wipe off the learning pad with a baby wipe.

I should have known better and thought ahead as to how the heck we would sharpen these big crayons...can't. And they broke almost immediately and the holders are thick and difficult to hold properly for kids' small hands. I should have returned right away but didn't...I guess the only option for the mats is a grade 2 pencil now I think, but haven't tried yet. Sure hope it works or the mats are a waste too.

These crayons should not bear the Melissa and Doug name. They are most definitely NOT of the quality and value I am accustomed to from M&D. Please, take them off the market! The crayons do not stay in the holders, are not of good quality, and are overall a poorly designed product. I find it hard to believe anyone would give this item a good rating. I am VERY disappointed. And my kids are very frustrated with this product.

I am disappointed in the crayons that go with the learning ingredients mats, they do not last and don't have options to replace them. Great concept for learning but need to be able to use other mediums to complete. Too difficult for children to use without crumbling and completely using up the colors.

I would not buy the crayons again, they fall out of the holders and they don't write very good. I am very disappointed.

My granddaughter received these as a gift (not from me although I do love and by Melissa and Doug toys. The crayons are very difficult to use and slip in the holder. When she tries to color with them it just doesn't work. The mats are cute and a great idea, however, I say back to the drawing board with the crayons.

My 3 yr old grandson loves the mat. The crayons fall out of the slot.
Can you recommend a better marker or product? I plan to return these to the store where I purchased them.

I LOVE the idea, however the crayons are awful! My daughter is 3 and loved using the mat and crayons, but just like the other reviews, they crumble under pressure! Its kind of counter intuitive for young children to use considering they use alot of pressure to color. They don't last very long for being a crayon. Ours also were dry and fell right out of the tube/holder. I think it would be better if they were wrapped. They can be a little difficult to wipe off the matt after use. I think these crayons could be improved.

I bought these for my granddaughter who loves the soft crayon to color on her mat. However, the plastic part of the crayon is a complete waste. The HALF of a soft crayon falls out almost immediately and the plastic part is immediately recycled. That's a waste of money and materials. It would be better to wrap them in paper like regular crayons and make them longer. My granddaughter colors pretty heavily so the crayons get under her nails, all over her clothes and in her hair. They are sticky, too. Clean up isn't too bad, most of it comes off of her fairly easily, it's just the hassle of looking her all over to find everything. And if she still has a piece of crayon stuck to finger that I may have missed after washing her hands or that she found on the floor, it can be easily wiped off on the wall! Sigh. Again, I'm grateful for the ease of cleaning, it's just that there is so much cleaning. On the plus side, my granddaughter loves the feel of them. I will not purchase again.

I love the product, but I realized the crayons will need refills within a day or two. I started searching online and refills don't exist. I probably won't continue to buy the crayons. 3 year old kids press hard when they color and they are sure to run out quickly.

These crayons were dried out right out of the package, bought at a school supplies store. They fell out of the holder when turned upside down and made a crumbly rather than smooth line. VERY DISSAPPOINTING. I would not recommend buying unless you know that you can return them. Washable markers worked just fine on the M@D learning mats.

I love the mats for my grandchildren but the crayons are a mess.

If i could give these a zero I would. They will not stay in the tubes!! Come on melissa & doug... don't act surprised....Looking at reviews throughout the web you should have made a replacement already!! Junk!

Got these for our 3-year-old. He loves the bright colours but they have many design flaws: he used about 1/2 of each crayon in less than 5 minutes of drawing on a learning mat (since they are soft, a bit of pressure makes them crumble everywhere); the crayons kept falling out of the holders, but were challenging even for an adult to move forward when they were worn down; and I assumed that it would be simple to buy refill crayons for these holders. Apparently not. Making them a huge waste of plastic and resources. I will certainly not get again, and would probably not bother to get refills for the holders even if they exist.

These were given as a birthday gift along with color and learning mats. My boys argue over who gets what. I would definitely recommend these! Thank you for something so easy for them and for mommy and daddy to clean up!

Have you made any changes to the learning mats regarding the crayons. That need improvement!

I first used these this past week = my grand children have the placemats from M&D - when used they sort of crumble....know they won't last very long...

Crayons are half as long as they look. (Big plastic holders for small crayon.) I'll probably have to replace them in a month. They're very soft and smeary. And it turned out a regular crayon can come off the mat with a bit of extra scrubbing. I'm not sure if that's worth it, but I don't think I'll be reordering the crayons. Maybe I'll laminate the learning mat and use wet or dry erase instead.

They barely write on the mats. If they get on anything else, it will not come out. I've tried everything.

The crayons worked well on the mat. Problem-the broke easily and kept sliding out of the holder.

I ordered 2 sets of the "crayons" as they were recommended when using the learning mats. They are thick, messy, gloppy, have faint pigment, and don't color anything..... T E R R I B L E

Easy to use no mess

The wipeable crayons work very well with the alphabet and numbers writing mat. My two year old had so much fun learning to trace the alphabet and numbers, switching from different colors, as well as enjoying the wiping off/cleaning part of the activity. Very educational and user friendly for toddlers and parents. Great bonding time to sit and teach your little one on the first steps of writing! I highly recommend this product!!!

PS. Do you sell re-fills of the crayons? My little one nearly finished all of it in one sitting. The moment she realised she can trace on her own (after teaching her once), she just kept working on it over and over again. :)

My 3 year old son and 5 year old daughter got 2 mats and a set of crayons as a gift. The crayons were half gone with first use! They are so soft they crumble when they color with them. The pieces that break off are the exact consistency of play dough, which gets rubbed into hands, clothes, my wood table and jammed into carpet fibers.

The mats CAN be used with regular crayons. I have had no trouble removing Crayola crayons from the mats using those magic erasers found near other kitchen sponges at the grocery store.

Bottom line, mats are great, crayons are junk. Unless your kids are delicate angels when they color I would not recommend these.

I was excited to work with my 4 yr old with these crayons and the learning mats. I called the company with no response. The colors are absolutely not VIBRANT. You couldn't tell the difference between the yellow and green and couldn't see those two colors on the mat. They seemed to wear down quickly. It's a nice idea but definitely needs to go back to the drawing room.

I am a huge fan of Melissa and Doug products; however, these fell short of what their other products have given. It seems like a great idea to encase the crayons in the hard plastic cover since I did find that my son just kept breaking his other crayons; however, the crayons wouldn't stay inside their holders, they kept falling out and my son ended up breaking the crayons and tossing the plastic covers to the side. Wasn't too upset since they were reasonable priced. The triangle crayons are much better from Melissa and Doug than these.
