The Best Baby Monitors
Unlike the baby monitors of old (which were really just like Walkie Talkies), we’re now in an age of HD video, night vision, Internet-streaming, built-in temperature sensors, two-way microphones, movement detection, pulse oximetry, long battery life with rechargeable batteries, high-quality audio, zoom features, and so much more. Also known as “baby alarms,” the baby monitor is designed to keep an eye on your little one while they sleep in the other room. This saves you from having to stay in the room with your baby and/or constantly opening and closing the door of their room to check on them. That freedom translates into your ability to get chores done around the house without interruption.
Today’s modern take on the baby monitor allows for so much more than just the simple freedom of being in another room, as the Internet allows you to check in your baby while you’re out on a date with your SO, at work, or grocery shopping. Many have their own mobile apps, too. You can also pan/tilt the camera from your smartphone. It’s so helpful, in fact, that many people continue to use these advanced baby monitors as security cameras after they are no longer needed for their child.
Many first-time parents might feel that a camera system or baby monitor is an added expense (it technically is), but it saves a tremendous amount of legwork on the part of the parent and provides peace of mind when the kids are at home with a babysitter . . . and it’s some of the coolest baby gear around.
Baby Monitor Safety
Of course, it almost goes without saying that you must keep all cords away from the crib and out of baby’s reach. Additionally, you’ll want to make sure that you are filling out the warranty card that came with your baby monitor, just in case there’s ever a product recall.
Choosing the Right Baby Monitor for You
There are a lot of options available when it comes to baby monitors, and the most important question to ask is “What do you need when it comes to keeping an eye (or ear) on your baby?” Simply, if you are in a smaller home or apartment and plan to be with your child full-time during the first year, you may just want to opt for an audio monitoring system to alert you to when your baby wakes up. On the other hand, if you have a big home or plan on being at work, out on dates, and generally anywhere without your baby, having a HD video camera that you can control allows you to check in on your baby from anywhere and can provide tremendous peace of mind when you miss your baby while you’re out of the house.
The other consideration is budget, and a general rule for parents who really want every bell and whistle available is to purchase the baby monitor that best meets their needs and that fits their budget. If budget is no problem, the bells and whistles are nice and worth the money.
